Bus Fare Collection and Reporting

The Corridor Transportation Corporation (CTC) retained the services of RNR Consulting to conduct a comprehensive fare box audit of Veolia Transportation. This initiative was specifically aimed at answering the questions of whether or not Veolia drivers were collecting fares correctly, what gaps existed within the cash counting process, and what are the industry best practices. In addition, the project team reviewed the current contract with the vendor (Veolia Transportation) and documented any discrepancies that were observed. With the aid of project sponsorship, the project team used formal interviews and discrete shadowing sessions as the primary method to gather data. This enabled RNR Consulting to obtain information regarding the fare box collection, money counting procedures, and driver performance.

RNR Consulting conducted interviews and shadowed bus operations by riding routes pre-selected by CTC based upon ridership. Through these interviews and shadowing sessions, targeted questions revealed vital information regarding current processes and performance as it related to fare box collection and revenue brought in by ridership. Additionally, the project team also reviewed informal fare collection reports and researched industry best practices.
