Geographic Information System (GIS) Implementation
GIS is a web-based tool that makes geographically-based information including maps, design plans, permits, and other types of documents available to system users to capture, store, update, and analyze these data sets. Some potential data sets included within this software are addresses and street names, street centerline data, aerial photographs, and parcel data. RNR Consulting acted as the Project Manager for the successful implementation of a Geographic Information System within the Engineering Division. Project activities included managing and tracking the activities of five separate project vendors, providing weekly project status updates to the City, acting as the prime contact for meeting schedules and decision requirements, outlining the City’s data requirements, determination of the data layers within the GIS, and any additional functional support for the client or their vendors.
The GIS system was successfully implemented at the City of Lancaster, integrating with the Hansen Asset Management and Customer Relationship Module. This integration provided system mapping benefits for citizens and asset work management. The long term intent of GIS implementation was to integrate the GIS with the City’s other systems including document management software and asset management software. The final product is a fully functional, fully integrated, geographical tool with which the users may manage digital images. This makes it easier for the City to process permits and make the required daily decisions.
